What is the canoeing route like on the Ardèche, with its rapids?

Our 12 km descent, which we call ‘the fun one’, starts in Sampzon. Please meet us at our base for a 10 am departure. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early.

Once everyone has arrived, we’ll take you by bus to the start of the route in Sampzon.

There are five rapids or slides to navigate, nothing too complicated. A lovely experience to share with family or friends, this route presents no major difficulties.

You should allow around 3 hours of paddling time, excluding breaks.

Between each slide there are stretches of calm water; once you reach the fifth slide, you’ll soon pass in front of Petite Mer beach, which marks roughly the halfway point of the route.

Some will enjoy a short break at our base, whilst others will carry on.

This route ends with the ‘must-see Pont d’Arc’ section, featuring small rapids and the passage beneath the majestic Pont d’Arc.

How’s the return journey from our canoe trip going?

We’ll arrange a time to meet at one of our meeting points; we’ll pick you up in a minibus and take you back to La Petite Mer for a drink.

Do you need to know how to swim to go canoeing down the Ardèche?

It is compulsory (under a prefectural decree) to be able to swim and feel comfortable in the water, as there is always a risk that your boat might capsize.

However, you can undertake the descent guided by an instructor. You will be in the instructor’s boat during the descent (private guide).

For children aged 4 to 7, the guide takes them in his boat, an open canoe with benches. He ensures a safe descent for everyone. Descend with a guide

An activity to enjoy with family or friends… suitable for ages 6–7 and above, provided you can swim, right up to… no upper age limit!

Can we go canoeing on the Ardèche with our dog?

This is still possible, except within the reserve, so the trails further upstream can be enjoyed with your dog. The ‘Unmissable Pont d’Arc’ and ‘Playful’ trails are both accessible. However, it is important to be aware of how your pet might react.

Can we go canoeing on the Ardèche with our 6-year-old, who can swim?

Yes, this is possible, but not as part of a rental package. The Ardèche River is subject to a prefectural order prohibiting rentals to children under the age of 7. At La Petite Mer, we offer guided trips led by a state-certified guide, who will ensure your trip is a wonderful holiday memory in complete safety.

Can you stop anywhere in the gorges?

Yes, it’s up to you to find your own little corner of paradise for swimming, picnicking, taking a nap… Camping is only permitted in the designated areas (Gaud and Gournier), which are managed by the nature reserve: camping bookings

What would you recommend taking for a camping trip in the Ardèche Gorges?

You’ll find everything you need for your midday picnics and food to grill in the evening (which you can freeze for longer shelf life); there are barbecue areas with charcoal on site. A little recipe idea: some grilled meat (a bit extra for the next day’s picnic sandwiches), some vegetables (aubergine is delicious cooked over the fire; slice it in half once cooked and use the purée, which will have taken on a slight smoky flavour – a real treat), or else courgettes on the barbecue and potatoes wrapped in foil and tossed into the embers. For a dessert that’s a hit with everyone in our family, chocolate-covered banana…
A tent (though you can also book tents through the tourist office), a groundsheet, a sleeping bag depending on the weather, warm clothes for the evening, a head torch…

What should we pack for our canoe trip down the Ardèche?

You must bring closed-toe shoes (water shoes, trainers or shoes that stay on your feet), a cap, water, a packed lunch and sun cream, although a T-shirt will be more effective and environmentally friendly.

What do we do if one of us doesn't want to go canoeing?

No problem, they can stay at our base and enjoy the beach, or walk into the centre of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (we’re no more than 15 minutes from the town centre). Free shuttle buses to the Pont d’Arc are also available, just a 5-minute walk from La Petite Mer, and this person will also be able to watch you navigate the Charlemagne rapids and pass under the majestic arch of the Pont d’Arc.
